The Steiner Academy of Martial Arts focuses on training the student more than just self defense. You will learn more than just the mechanics of the technique, you will understand why, how, and when to use it. The physical training helps you focus more on your limits and how to exceed them. The martial art tradition is very special to the Academy. The lineage of instruction is amazing. I attend classes knowing I will be sore the next day, but, over time, I lost weight and became physically tougher. I have learned better ways to focus, not only in class or in training, but also in life. The people at the Academy, students and facility, make you feel welcome. It doesn’t matter if you are a beginner or a black belt, you are accepted with open arms and treated evenly. I highly recommend this training Academy to anyone.

Sensei Steiner works extremely well with boys and girls of all ages. He uses the disciplines of Kempo karate to mold young minds and inspires confidence. My daughter has been in this dojo since first grade and has advanced at a comfortable pace. She used what she learned early on in defense of herself with an extremely favorable outcome. We began in the beginners class and advanced to the twice a week class. Now we are in one of the Saturday classes. Our family prefers the Saturday class. We also availed Sensei Steiner in a one-on-one session to focus on polishing my daughter’s moves for her 5th belt. This session was extremely helpful. Sensei Steiner also uses the abilities of other excellent black belt former and current students in different class settings. I cannot find fault in any of them. They are all top notch! My daughter also attended a firearms training class. She frequently goes target shooting with her father, uncle and cousins. I would like to deduct only 1/2 a star from the above rating. This gives the Sensei something to strive for..

Steiner Martial Arts Academy is a amazing example of what a martial arts school should be.  Unlike the corporate run schools where profits and a watered down curriculum that are easy to digest and structured to empty parents pockets, this academy  is run and taught by Steiner himself “mom and pop style”.  Steiner knows every student on a personal level.  He knows their strengths and weaknesses and is constantly tailoring their experience to help them develop as an individual. Some students need help with being timid,  some with attention and focus,  some with determination, essentially  he helps them all reach their balanced maximum potential. Sounds too good to be true?  I was skeptical at first too…but both me and my 6 yo son and I are students there, and I assure you this school is a precious rare find. The skills trained there are a mix of the traditional and the practical…designed to prepare you for self defense and help you develop your inner strength and character. If you have ever considered martial arts for your child or yourself  I’d suggest you check out this school, Old World “mom and pop” style businesses are slowly disappearing …don’t miss out on this one.

My son is in the Tiny Tiger’s class at Steiner Academy.  I have found that Sensei Steiner has a special ability with children that you just don’t find everywhere.  He has control of the class, speaks the kids’ language and the kids have so much fun learning martial arts with his instruction.  My son trusts & respects Sensei already, which is rewarding to see.  I highly recommend Steiner Academy.

Beth Black BeltThe benefits of being a part of Steiner Academy of Martial Arts go way beyond a hobby, the experience is an opportunity to learn and grow physically as well as learn about yourself as a person. Martial Arts allows for students, children and adults, to test their limits and accomplish goals in a safe and challenging environment. Karate focuses on character building but it’s also a great place to make friends, get in shape and learn how to defend yourself with confidence.

I am currently a student and an assistant instructor at Steiner Academy of Martial Arts, located in

Omaha, Nebraska. I have been training with Sensei Shawn M. Steiner in the art of Shaolin Kempo

since September 1998.

My intent was to learn a style of martial arts that I could utilize in defense of myself and to stay

physically active. I have trained in other styles of martial arts, yet I had no focus. My journey here at

Steiner Academy of Martial Arts, is an amazing one.

At age 56, I earned my Black Belt training with Sensei Steiner, and martial artists from across the

country.

I am a father of three male children ages 15, 13, and 9 they are developing into young men. Providing

discipline, social skills, and martial training is extremely challenging. It is difficult to find quality at

affordable prices.

At the end of the day; Steiner Academy of Martial Arts is the place were quality and price match up.

I train there; and so do my children!

Hope to see you there!

Do You Care?

Do you care about training to defend yourself? How about someone you Love? Your wife or girlfriend? Your child, your sister, a close friend? Or maybe someone you don’t know who just needs your help? If you think this is something you need or want to do, this here is where you should be training. I know the owner and his staff personally so I know what they emphasize and why they do what they do. But it still comes back to the question, “Why?” Why you ask? One simple reason. They care, even when you don’t!

Teaches great self-discipline, self-control, self-defense, and respect.

My son has attended Steiner Academy of Martial Arts for a couple of years now. In that time, he has really learned a lot about himself, including self-discipline, self-control, respect, and self-defense. Steiner Academy has also helped him “come out of his shell” and have more confidence.

I AM VERY PLEASED WITH THE CLASS AND THE POSITIVE EXPERIENCE THAT MY DAUGHTER IS GAINING. I HAVE NOTICED THAT SHE IS GAINING SELF CONFIDENCE IN HERSELF AND IS BEING MORE SOCIAL WITH OTHERS. SHE IS LEARNING ABOUT DISCIPLINE AND RESPECT. OVERALL, THIS IS TRULY A POSITIVE AND REWARDING EXPERIENCE FOR HER.

In my 43 years in the martial arts its been my pleasure and a rare thing to encounter a teacher like sensei Steiner. I would have to say he is one of the top instructors ive met. He really shines in the instruction of children and young adults. Im highly impressed at his ability to teach young minds very important life skill concepts and yet understand they are kids. This is not something that’s easily found in traditional or commercial martial arts studios today. His program ( for adults and kids) offers solid instruction in practical basics both physically and mentally. Sensei Steiner’s life experiences contributes greatly to his ability to teach people regardless of age,sex or ability. The adult program offers effective street orientated self defense and Sensei Steiner’s back ground in military, police and combat self defense systems adds realism to all that he teaches! I highly recommend this school!

Exceptional multi-discipline training.

My husband is a student and assistant instructor at Steiner Academy. He was previously attending classes at another school, however his transfer to SAMA was a smart move. He has learned fundamentals of Shaolin Kempo, Kyusho, as well as Sparring and Grappling techniques. At SAMA, he has had the opportunity to train with instructors of a wide variety of disciplines that many other schools do not offer. I believe that this atmosphere of collaboration makes him a better student and teacher of martial arts. Sensei Steiner treats his students with respect and teaches practical skills for self defense. Students work hard, but also have fun learning new skills. I recommend SAMA for students of all ages and abilities. Sensei Steiner also offers women’s self defense courses, firearms training for all levels, and CCW courses. Sign up today and become part of the SAMA family.

My daughter is a student at Steiner Academy of Martial Arts, and at first was reluctant to take part. Sensei Steiner has a way of helping kids find their inner strength and use that strength to grow. My daughter’s confidence has dramatically improved, and she now can do things she never thought she’d be able to do – as a direct result of her regular participation in Kempo classes. While things can sometimes seem rough around the edges to new students and families, everything has a purpose to the greater learning experience, and in ways that aren’t always expected. I believe that Sensei Steiner and his team do a great job at not only the day-to-day learning activities, but also the larger picture of self-development and growth. I would definitely recommend Sensei Steiner’s Academy to others!!

My 6 year old son has been going to Steiner Academy for almost a year, and has really experienced many valuable lessons. What he has learned has not only been valuable in his martial arts development, but also in his ability to become more respectful towards his family and friends. I would recommend Sensei Steiner’s programs for all ages..

My name is Kayla. I’m am 16 years old and under 5 feet tall. I have a black belt under Sensei Steiner and have been in martial arts since I was 4 years old. I started under another school in town and about 8 years ago I started at Steiner Acadamy. I love it here. It is by far the best place to go for self defense and gun tactics. I consider the people that go here as part of my family. Sensei Steiner had taught me so much, not only in karate but life skills. SAMA changed my life.

Excellent school with outstanding training

I have been a student here for 13 years, and I can say that it was one of the best choices I’ve made. I learned the art of self-defence, but more importantly learned greater discipline and self-confidence that has greatly enhanced other aspects of my life. Do yourself a great favor – become a student today!

Best place in town to study Multiple Martial Arts!

Steiner Academy of Martial Arts is THE place to go! I got brought up there by my friend that just wanted to try it out. My friend stopped pursuing it after a few belts, but I studied for 2 years and became a blue belt! I am SO glad I did. I learned so much about being more humble, calm and exponentially stronger as a person physically and mentally! Shawn Steiner and his instructors teach you the art of Shaolin Kempo Karate, while also cross training you in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Kyuosho Jitsu, (Pressure Points) and a side class with Sub-Level Kempo Karate. They also teach more focused classes on Sparring, and Grappling. It’s not just for adults either, the KIDS class they teach is amazing! I’ve seen them have nothing but fun, and they also have kids events like pizza party’s every so often as well. By learning all of this you all together have the potential of being a much more rounded martial artists and you are prepared for any situation that could happen to you anywhere; whether it is someone holding you at gunpoint, attacking you with a club, knife, etc. They put you in situations so you can practice and polish what you’ve learned in a full-contact environment with other students so that you get a more realistic idea of how it will be when you get attacked in person, and you can practice and polish your skills. One other thing, is Sensei Steiner ALSO teaches a CCW class for anyone trying to get a handgun permit. The amazing thing about this school is that even though it’s full contact I have never seen or heard of anyone getting badly hurt in that class of any sort besides a possible bloody nose every now & then if your not paying attention! Haha. Anyways I Highly recommend going here over every other place in town, and for the price you get for studying martial arts here, it’s the best system I’ve heard of and you will feel you are UNDERpaying for the teaching you get here! Hope this helps everyone that is curious about this school answer any questions you have. Sorry about the long description, I couldn’t explain a school this great with just a short paragraph. Shawn is a fantastic instructor, and a great person in general you can always talk to him about anything, and he Is always willing to help!

My wife and I came in to signup my youngest child for karate. Steiner asked if we would be interested in joining ourselves and surprising to me my wife was willing to try, so the whole family ended up going. It has been over 7 months now and we are all still training and learning. Made new friends and are getting more fit and enjoying ourselves.

I joined Steiner Academy of Martial Arts in April. Being a 36 year old female with very little athletic ability, I was apprehensive about joining a martial arts program. When I called, I was assured that I would be able to learn. I visited for one session and decided to join.

It was one of the best things I have ever done for myself. I have learned many lessons about self defense, but the lessons I have learned about surpassing my expectations of myself have been greater in number and in scope. Sensei Steiner and the other instructors have been there for me every step of the way.

Steiner Academy of Martial Arts has not only changed my view of myself, but it has also made me a more confident person. Sensei Steiner’s teachings have enabled me to go above and beyond what I believed were my limitations. My intentions were to learn more about self defense. What I have received in return is a better way of life. Come to the dojo, and you will see what I mean.

The owner and instructor at Steiner Academy of Martial Arts is a quality instructor and individual. In my experience, he works very well with both adults and children and instills a core sense of values lacking in many learning environments today. No matter your reason for seeking martial arts training, this school is your answer.

The Steiner Academy of Martial Arts has been an extremely positive influence in the development of my young children.  In the last two years their discipline, self control and self-confidence have made tremendous gains.   Sensei Steiner and his instructors show amazing patience with these children and make learning fun.  They can’t wait to go to class each week. I was so impressed with the material, instructors and the students that I decided to enroll myself; one of the best decisions I have ever made.  I recommend this dojo to all students and parents.

My plan to begin martial arts was to have my son trained in techniques/principles to defend himself in an ever increasingly dangerous world. I decided to take classes with him and it has been one of my best decisions. My son at age 11 was scared going into the first class. At the end of that class, he looked up at me and said, “Can we do this stuff, I love this stuff.” That boy is now age 21 and has achieved the rank of 2nd degree black belt at the Steiner Academy of Martial Arts. The foundation martial arts style is Shaolin Kempo. But Sensei Steiner has opened the philosophy to the basics of “what ever works in self defense.” Students are taught techniques against punches, grabs, knives, guns and clubs. Additionally, Sensei Steiner has contacts with martial artists across the country and has included pressure point fighting techniques and grappling (ground fighting), along with sparring in order to provide a well-rounded experience. Sensei even holds Citizen Handgun Training classes for those interested. One of the most important and personally rewarding aspects of studying under Sensei Steiner is that practical self defense tactics are taught and various scenarios are discussed to engage the student’s mind and awareness. One unique opportunity is Budo Camp. This is a Friday night – Sunday afternoon camp where instructors from around the country come to a camp just south of Omaha to teach aspects of their arts. It is an amazing way to get exposure to different arts/styles/philosophies in a concentrated time-frame and anyone who has attended has raved about it and shows up the next year. This is open to any martial artist across the country and usually is attended by students of both coasts, the midwest and southwest. I am one of the oldest students and at age 55 achieved my 1st degree black belt. If I did not realize the high standards of instruction and broad opportunities presented at Steiner Academy of Martial Arts, I would not have put in 10 years of effort and still my training continues. Many people want to “find themselves” and I can tell you that the study of martial arts is a valid path towards self- discovery. This training has boosted my confidence, challenged old ways of thinking, improved my physical/mental health, instilled a sense of commitment towards earning goals and provided a venue to develop friendships with many high quality people. Knowing what I know now about Sensei Steiner and the multitude of unique experiences afforded at our school, I would be signing up again. As an older man with not much range of motion at my hips, the Kempo training of primarily arm/hand techniques fit my abilities wonderfully. Accommodations are made for different types of physical limitations that still allows even the over-40 year-olds to gain significant benefits of training while limiting risk of injury.
Entering into martial arts is a way to see what you are made of. The training is not easy, but definitely worth the effort physically and mentally. It is a way to improve coordination, balance, strength, grace of movement and speed of movement. I view martial arts similar to the way I think about swimming: it is a fun activity in itself, but under the right circumstances it can be a life-saving skill. I encourage anyone reading my thoughts to please visit the school and talk with Sensei Steiner and the students to gain a better sense of the quality of this instruction and what it can provide you. Typically, Sensei will allow anyone interested in martial arts to take a free class so they can make a better informed decision. Sincerely, Dr. Kip Burkman

I trained with Sensei Steiner most of my teenage years. The knowledge I learned there will stay with me for life. I use much of what I learned every day of my life as there are countless ways to apply the knowledge. Not only did it help me stay in shape, but it has also kept me safe in a few rough situations. Steiner has also become a great business associate of mine. The Academy is a great place to meet like-minded people. Joining his school back when I was 15 yrs old was probably the best thing I could have ever done for myself.

An excellent dojo for families. Shawn Steiner is a great teacher of both children and adults. The style of Kempo taught will help you become able to defend yourself in any situation”

Awesome dojo! Steiner academy of martial arts is a really cool dojo, and Sensei Steiner is a really good instructor. I’ve been to several dojos and had many instructors, but Sensei Steiner is the only one I call sensei. he cares about his students, and he encourages us to be our best, and thats what martial arts is all about. check out steiner academy of martial arts, you will see by the faces that the classes are right for you!–

My sons have gained self-confidence and maturity as they were taught Kempo Karate at Steiner Academy of Martial Arts. Sensei Steiner has taught our boys for close to 10 years now.   I have to say that a good part of his patience and ability to deal with hard situations are so well developed because of the years training there. He learned that hard work pays off and felt the satisfaction of working towards and earning the belt ranks. My second son is continuing classes for close to 5 years now and is learning that the effort you put forth is directly related to the rewards.

Greg

It is a privilege to practice with the many amazing people who make up the community of martial artists at this dojo. I have learned many things while training in self-defense at the Steiner Academy of Martial Arts. However, none of them come as difficult for me as the physical aspect. I could have many excuses not to try martial arts: I can’t learn physically, my body doesn’t move that way, I’m out of shape, this is too hard, everyone else is better than me and I keep practicing wrong. But there is one reason I have not given up on myself. Training in martial arts at Steiner Academy is many things, but the one most important to me is that I’m not just learning how to conquer an opponent, but I’m learning how to conquer myself, my doubts, my fears and insecurities. Sensei Steiner and the instructors at the Academy believe that they are not only shaping amazing martial artists but amazing people. So no matter your excuse, I encourage you to give Steiner Academy of Martial Arts an opportunity to help you discover your doubts, fears and insecurities because in discovering them you also discover the opportunity to conquer them all.

Jennie N.

I have had my kids in Steiner Academy for years. Shawn is an excellent instructor. This is the job he was meant to do. I trust him with teaching my kids, which is the highest recommendation I can give, and would recommend his school to anyone serious about learning self-defense.

Sensei Steiner is an extraordinary instructor. Through his tactfulness he teaches his students honor, respect, and comradery. He is not afraid of learning new things and then passing it on to others that are willing to learn as well.

Sensei Steiner and his instructors are awesome. The first six months both of our daughters (6 & 8) were enrolled and received excellent instruction. Our 6 year old is continuing instruction loving it! Our 8 year old still always wants to go in and say hi even though karate was not for her 🙂 They understand that there is not one style to teach and take the time to learn about your child and how they learn. My husband and I have been enrolled in the adult classes for over six months now. Not only is it a great way to get some exercise and training but a good way for us to spend some time together. Steiner Academy of Martial Arts is not just a school but a family. We could not be happier with our experience.

Shawn is one of those martial arts-a-holics who spends much time in other arts, and has for a spell. He spars and rolls well, and has established and maintained training relationships and friendships with a lot of guys outside his art. Some kenpo, some kempo, some BJJ, some kyusho, some FMA, etc. Actually has a pretty good smattering of skills under his belt. I’d be glad to have him watching my back in a brawl. In addition to his skills, he’s got a good heart and a fighting spirit where you know if something needs to get done, he’ll step in and do it…and I don’t feel that way about all that many people.

Bounced with lotsa guys with cleaner lineages than Shawn, who ended up standing there or becoming part of the problem in major blow-outs. Despite their training, they couldn’t think. Shawn’s a thinker, and that counts for more to me than lineage. My take, anyways. If I didn’t trust and respect him, I wouldn’t be presenting at his camp. For what it’s worth.

My son has been at Steiner Academy for several years. He has benefited from many of their programs including week night classes, intensive training on weekends and grappling classes. This isn’t just about self defense. It’s also about discipline, self-control and character building. The instructors are attentive to the students and highly skilled at teaching martial arts. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for high quality martial arts school for their child.

Knowledgeable instruction in multiple styles of martial arts. Personal attention from an instructor with years of training and teaching. This is a school where advancement and promotion is earned with great pride. Would highly recommended that anyone interested in studying Martial Arts contact the school and see for themselves. Ask about the many forms taught of martial arts one can learn. It is worth the time

If you’re looking for a place to learn how to defend yourself, this is the place for adults as well as children. You don’t need to send your children to a special anti-bullying course, it’s included regularly at Steiner AMA. Traditional sports isn’t an avenue for every child, let them burn off energy in a good way. If you’ve experienced other training, sports or karate styles, you’ll see what you’ve been missing. I came from various civilian and military training; I finally found a home at age 52 and I train hard. No egos here, you’ll find friendly, energetic, excited and knowledgeable students and instructors. Techniques are tested not just copied. Walk-in’s welcomed. “MC” Flott

Great school, kid friendly, all the instructors take their time to help kids from different belt ranks to do their techniques correctly, they discipline and mentor the kids and build confidence, and that’s what we want for our kids.
